The T.I.M.E.(tm), a new diagnostic assessment by Lucy Jane Miller, Ph.D., OTR, and Gale H. Roid, Ph.D., will allow occupational therapists (OTs) and physical therapists (PTs) to evaluate their pediatric clients quickly and easily. This assessment can be used with children from birth to 3 1/2 years to comprehensively evaluate their motor proficiencies and difficulties. Besides being useful as a diagnostic assessment, The T.I.M.E.(tm) is a scale that will be useful in treatment planning and treatment efficacy research of very young children. Embodying the spirit of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), this assessment utilizes parent-elicited responses from children to obtain highly accurate results. The T.I.M.E.(tm) focuses on children's abilities, not their disabilities. This standardized assessment includes eight subtests for observing all aspects of a child's motor development:

*

Mobility

*

Functional Performance

*

Stability

*

Quality Rating

*

Motor Organization

*

Component Analysis

*

Social/Emotional Abilities

*

Atypical Patterns Standard scaled scores are available for five of the subtests. Therapists can use the three optional clinical subtests for more detailed descriptions of a child's motor abilities. Illustrated record forms facilitate scoring. In one handy and portable kit, clinicians will find everything they need to assess the motor abilities of young children.
