Propelled into instant fame after his innovative poster for Sarah Bernhardt's 1894 production of Gismonda, Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 18601939) went on to commercial success. Before the poster, Mucha had been a capable illustrator and painter who kept what he considered his real art safely in the Academic mode. After the poster, he worked prolifically in his new style, producing sumptuous advertisements for many of the goods we now associate with the erabicycles, Champagne, cigarettes. This calendar presents a dozen beautiful examples of le style Mucha, which has come to epitomize the Art Nouveau style of turn-of-the-century Paris.
